SJ-DC-CJK01-01 A Whale of a Time

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A lone kindori has been spotted resting at the edge of Gleamspace and it has not moved for several days. Is this a sign of poachers returning to the system, or perhaps an indication of something worse? People are curious and worried, and someone has put forward the funds for an investigative party.

A Four-Hour Adventure for Tier 1 Characters. Optimized for APL 3.

Valid for Adventurers League play per the Season 12 DungeonCraft program.

A cleanly-organized and well-formatted adventure with a healthy portion of comedy, a bit of heartstring-pulling, and a sprinkle of horror and uncertainty, A Whale of a Time is a compact 11-pages-long (12 with art) adventure with interesting encounters that cover all the Pillars of Play. The adventure revolves around a bit of mystery/investigation into why a lonely kindori has suddenly appeared nearby and involves unique social encounters and combats in which exploration and dungeoncrawling form the base.

The adventure fits snugly into four hours, but included is an optional subplot for an additional 45-60 min of play. This subplot dives (a little) more into the mysterious story of the kindori's past and offers more opportunity for characters to connect on an emotional level with it.

This adventure is also supplemented with maps and over two dozen bits of colourful art (in my simple but unique and comical style) to further enhance the imagination and help set the scene. Maps and art are all included as original-resolution PNGs in the accompanying Art Package for easy drop-in into any VTT. A Printer-Friendly PDF is also part of the download.

Though the final battle is sure to be anything from tactical and valorous to silly and comedic, it is going to be a wild ride and will leave your adventurers feeling like Heroes. But the real final encounter, which comes up unexpectedly on the unsuspecting adventurers, will have your adventurers become introspective and thoughtful.

Loosely-inspired by Douglas Adams and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, welcome to A Whale of a Time! It's sure to be just that!

I only got around to running this recently, as I saw it was published after the new DC rules dropped (1.3), and so I figured I would wait to see what the guidance was. I also played at the table of one of the author's runs of this, and then I boug [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
