Content Warning

In addition to the traditional antagonists, archetypal evil, and sinister societies encountered in the kinds of fantasy adventures Dungeons & Dragons is known for, this book addresses some topics that can be very stressful for some readers.

Negative Psychological Effects

Magic, darkness, and even weather can drive characters wild. This is a general theme throughout the book, but is especially prevalent in certain planes described in chapter 3:

The Feywild (memory loss)
The Shadowfell (despair)
The Abyss (aggression)
Arborea (yearning)
Bytopia (alignment change)
Elysium (complacency)
Gehenna (selfishness)
Hades (depression)
Mechanus (alignment change)
The Nine Hells (alignment change)
Pandemonium (obsession)

These planes have optional exploration rules to represent the ways the realms wear down or build up visitors and alter their mental state. If anyone in your play group is uncomfortable with this narrative, you can disregard those exploration rules.

Death and the Afterlife

In traditional D&D cosmology, the souls of deceased creatures live on in the planes. This is a general theme throughout the book and cannot be easily avoided. Chapter 2 provides options for adapting the mechanics and lore of creature agency and the afterlife to suit your play group’s preferences.

Child Maltreatment

This topic is only breached once in the book, in chapter 3, discussing Mount Celestia’s favorite mortals to protect, watch over, and invite to angelhood. This can be easily avoided by saying that Mount Celestia’s inhabitants have no favorites.

Being Respectful

Being Respectful

Everyone in your play group is responsible to behave respectfully. Here’s some helpful guidelines you can use to establish what boundaries your table wants to set while enjoying a planar campaign.

Content Warning

Have an open discussion about what player and DM comfort levels are in regards to the topics described in the Content Warning above. This conversation can take place as a group or privately, one-on-one between DM and players.

If the table as a whole is comfortable with a topic, discuss how immersive you’d like to get in such moments. Some players enjoy the catharsis of being immersed in difficult conflicts for a character, some don’t.

If anyone in the play group is uncomfortable with a topic, don’t breach that topic. You don’t need to ask why; any shock value isn’t as important as everyone having fun.

Personal History

If a player or DM is uncomfortable with a topic, you don’t need to ask why. Simply knowing preferences is enough information to show respect.

If another member of your play group confides in you why they’re uncomfortable with a topic, especially if it’s for a traumatic reason, don’t share it with others and don’t try to incorporate it into the story anyways.

Change Topics

If your group decides to dive into the darker elements of this book or add your own serious twists to the lore and mechanics within, people may change their minds or discover they’re uncomfortable with topics they originally thought would be fine. If someone raises a concern like this, even if it’s at an inconvenient time in the story, listen. Change the topic. Add it as a new item to your list of topics not to be discussed or brought into the story.

Group members can voice their concerns when they come up, but sometimes that can be daunting. To make it easier, you can implement a “magic word,” “safe word,” or “password” that group members can say to indicate they’re uncomfortable. You could also have a special symbol on the table (such as a paper with a large X drawn on it) that a party member can touch to indicate the same.

If someone expresses discomfort, that’s a good time to take a break to discuss comfort levels, grab a snack, and use the bathroom.

The Dark of It (FAQ)

The Dark of It (FAQ)

Q: Do I need to own Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse to use this book?

A: Although many readers will find having both books enhances their experience, no you don't. The Manual of the Planes is designed to be a standalone product that dovetails perfectly with Adventures in the Multiverse, not one that ignores or replaces it.

Q: What kind of art is in this book?

A: This book has decorative graphics, characteristic quotes, and a diagram of the Inner Planes. In future updates, we may add additional diagrams and maps of other planes. It does not have traditional illustrations. We would LOVE to have included traditional illustrations, but stock art that fits the unique landscapes and creatures of the planes is rare or nonexistant, our production timeline didn't have enough time to commission custom art, and commissioning custom art was financially unfeasible during development.

Q: 2nd Edition (2e) Planescape books were written using planewalker slang, while most 5th Edition (5e) books are written in the style of a reference text. What kind of writing style does the Manual of the Planes use?

A: The main text of the book is written in the 5e style, like an imaginative and entertaining encyclopedia or textbook. Many of our characteristic quotes use planewalker slang in the 2e style. A planewalker slang dictionary is provided on page 2 and can be found in the file preview.

Q: Is there a version of the PDF that is friendly to black-and-white home printers?

A: Yes! The reduced-file size version is in black and white and lacks any decorative graphics. It is included as a download option with this purchase.

Q: Is there a reduced file size version of the PDF?

A: Yes! The reduced-file size version is in black and white and lacks any decorative graphics. It is included as a download option with this purchase.

Q: If I buy the PDF now, will I have access to future updates?

A: Yes. You can access updated files in your DMs Guild/DriveThru RPG library at any time after purchasing.

Q: Will there be a print-on-demand edition?

A: That's the hope. We intend to offer the Manual of the Planes in print beginning in early 2024.

Q: If I buy the PDF now, will I have a discount on the print-on-demand version? Will there be a discount on the print-on-demand edition if I purchase the PDF version before?

A: Yes. If we are able to offer a print-on-demand edition, we will also offer a discount bundle option for people who already own the PDF. This will let you subtract the PDF's cost from the print-on-demand edition's cost.

Changelog

1.0 (October 2023) - Original version.

1.0.1 (October 2023) - Typo correction. Added a printer-friendly, black-and-white, reduced file size version that is included as a download option with this purchase.

May consider Unveiling the Multiverse ($2.50) - spent a year researching and writing this 174 page book and have original artwork for all planes too. https://www.dmsguild.com/product/458306/Unveiling-the-Multiverse-Cosmology-of-the-Planes

Has anyone who's read this also read through the Codex of Infinite Planes? How does that compare? I own a hard cover of the Codex and I'm wondering if its worth it to grab this too. Much of the contents seem to cover the same topics, but I do see some new things in here that are interesting. I am mostly interested in planes lore and information on the setting. Thanks!

Excellent question! Here's what the author of the Codex of Infinite Planes had to say on the matter:

"I picked up this Manual of the Planes this morning from the DMsGuild, and my first impression - incredible work! As someone with their own treatise on the planes up for sale (cough cough Codex of the Infinite Planes) I'm always keen on expanding my knowledge of the planes and diving into other takes on the infinite nature of the multiverse. This is a really good sourcebook with lots of cool ideas - I especially love the planar effects table for each plane, I wish I had thought of that one! Definitely looking forward to picking up the Manual of the Planes on POD when it becomes available. Nice layout, good use of styles to break up the pages (definitely LOOKS like a Planescape book from the 2E era!), loads of useful information for building out and playing on the planes. Great job to the team!"

Great question! I sometimes do that with DMs Guild products too. It does not come with a back cover to the PDF - it simply ends at page 336 with the final page of the Appendix. I don't know about your friendly local print shop, but the places I've had print 100+ page PDFs for me offer a nice piece of cardstock or plastic for a back cover on my spiral-bound products for only a small fee.

Exactly how likely is it that a PoD version of this will actually come out? I heard they'll only let you do it if the book sells well enough, but this looks to be really popular so I'm curious as to how close it is to meeting the necessary criteria.

Extremely likely. We've already started working on the finer details that PoD requires on the production end, and we're already around a third of the way to the required digital sales to qualify for PoD in only 2-3 weeks. So by the time the PoD version is ready for production in early 2024, we fully expect to have also met the sales requirements.

If something's been consistent through all editions of planar content then we've kept it the same in all or most cases, but previous planar content isn't always consistent from edition to edition or even within editions. For example, the 5e DMG says that the archdevil Moloch uses the statistics of an imp, while 5e's Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse says he uses a CR 20+ unique stat block. When lore within 5e or between 5e and earlier editions conflicted, we tried to go with the lore we thought was a good mix between recent, interesting, and user-friendly. Sometimes we also made changes thanks to guidance from our sensitivity reader.

To give a good idea of what kind of intentional lore decisions we made, here's a list of examples from the top of my head:
- Modrons and Mechanus. Historically, most modrons are clownishly bureaucratic and rigidly organized. While we wanted to keep that core identity of modron culture, we also made sure to include examples of rogue, exiled, and expatriate...See more

"Sensitivity readers" are a meme and removing the fact that evil Djinn keep slaves from the lore is just one of the reasons why I won't purchase this product. Only a tiny, tiny fraction of TTRPG players want that kind of thinly-veiled activism in the material.

Not to mention that half the promotion page is used to tell us how we should play our games.

How about - no. How people choose to their games is up to them and noone needs you telling them how or what they should be doing at their tables.

The only thing that I (and nearly everyone else) wants is interesting, balanced content and ideas.

That's actually exactly why we have such a prominent content warning (as well as a detailed table of contents and FAQ)! So potential purchasers can know whether this is the right product for them. I'm glad to know it's helped you figure that out for yourself.

If you and your players are interested in a really gritty, intense kind of setting that delves into issues of slavery, torture, drug use, and the like, I highly recommend this Platinum-bestselling product by the fantastic designer Cassandra MacDonald, "Skullport: Shadow of Waterdeep." Nice work! There are some questions that hold me back from making a purchase. I don't know what the Great Wheel section of Chapter 3 encapsulates that's different from the DMG. Ideally, some pages added to the preview would be nice since most of the preview was player options and I don't think that's why I'd buy this; that or some page spreads in the product descriptions.

As someone that mostly wants a GM toolbox to spark ideas thematic to the planes as well as facilitatte running and prepare the game while doing so, the "Ideas for Building Planar Adventures" tagline that you pitched is what I am most interested in. There are a few things that I found lacking on both PS:AitM and the DMG when compared to high-usability toolbox books like Fizban, Bigby's, and Ravenloft, and I was wondering if this could expand it in a similar DM-friendly format. With that in mind is any of the following content for the planes in this book?

♦ Random encounter tables for each plane by tier (The...See more

Thank you for letting us know your questions and concerns! You have perfect timing. I spent much of yesterday preparing an additional preview of chapter 3 content for many of the reasons you describe. You can click on "Alternate Preview" above to see the introduction to chapter 3 and the Pandemonium entry as an example. That being said, let's tackle the specifics of your comment.

What's different between chapter 3 of this book and the DMG cosmology chapter? Detail. Most planes in the DMG's cosmology chapter get a few paragraphs describing them. In this book, most planes have several pages of content instead.

Specific DM Tools
- Random Encounter Table: chapter 2 has "Creature Theme" tables, lists of creatures from the Monster Manual, P:AitM, and our book sorted by challenge rating and what kinds of planes you might find them in. Chapter 3 plane entries refer to these creature theme tables. Just like the creature theme tables in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft...See more

Thank you for the thoughtful reply and consideration! I am going to buy it on my next paycheck! Seeing the preview, and your reply here are my thoughts!
♦ I do like the Creature Theme roster format as well, since I can use it to write or edit my own Tiered Tables based on the roster (Do they have some planar creatures from Mordenkainen's MotM as well?)
♦ The Regional Effects table by itself is a great addition and a book seller, it reminds me a lot of Tasha's Supernatural Regions. The Exploration Rules sidebar for each is also really handy and can even help one come up with their own locations and together they really make interacting with the plane feel different. I like the idea of printing both as an insert for the DM screen whenever the party goes to the specific plane.
♦ Since I see that there are some adventure hooks in different chapters, would an appendix like Bigby's with a table of Adventure Hooks that works as both a spark table and an index for them make sense?
♦ I...See more

Ooo detailed feedback is my favorite kind of feedback! Thank you for all of this!

We could get into the specifics of whether 5e even has or should have bounded accuracy (it certainly has bounded ability scores and most DCs are set around 10-25), but it's probably most productive to assume that it's at least *close* to bounded accuracy, regardless of whether it technically is or should be. Similarly, we could also get into the specifics of what power range is acceptable for feats (which may have a different intended power range than abilities from a dragonmark subrace or variant race, or a cantrip, or a class feature).

But suffice it to say for now, you've definitely opened up an interesting topic of conversation and math that I'll get into with our development team more as we refine the product further in preparation for the Print on Demand edition. For example, I'll look further into how this compares to feats like Resilience, Skilled, Skill Expert, or Tough, how the math for common...See more

What Matthew D said. We took the para and quasielemental planes and combined them under one large conglomerate - the Elemental Chaos. There was a *lot* of discussion within the team about how to best approach the para/quasiplanes, and this was the result we ended up deciding was the best mix of faithful to the spirit of the originals and being user friendly.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
