Doomed Forgotten Realms Volume Three: Fall of Vecna

Imagine a world where Tiamat was summoned successfully. Where the Princes of Elemental Evil tread unfettered. Where Demogorgon prowls the Underdark with the Wand of Orcus, leaving an army of undead in his wake. Where the storm giants have been cast to the bottom of the Ordning. Where Baldur's Gate has been banished to the Nine Hells. . . .

Imagine a world where good has lost and evil prevailed.

The Sword Coast has been divvied up by the Zhentarim, the mountain giants of Grudd Haug, the Cult of the Dragon, and many other sinister factions. But above them all looms the Archlich Vecna, who has orchestrated or exploited a series of ever-escalating calamities to conquer the very Realms themselves.

Will your players rise to the challenge? Or, will they too, fall before the might of Vecna?

Adventure Awaits

This 240+ page adventure is designed to take players from 10th to 20th level. It is not necessary to have played the previous adventures, and Fall of Vecna can be run as a stand-alone adventure for brand new characters. Additionally, advice has been provided to help transition higher level characters from other Wizards of the Coast products. Best yet, the product’s modular nature allows DMs to selectively pick and choose content to embed within their own homebrew campaign.

For those brave enough to play Fall of Vecna in its entirety they can expect to:

  • Embark upon an impossible mission to break into the impregnable Hosttower of the Arcane!
  • Traverse the dread domains of Ravenloft in search of Vecna’s darkest secrets!
  • Descend into an undersea chasm within the Scarlet Marpenoth to battle Urthuyn, an ancient kraken!
  • Hijack the adamantine titan known as the Vonindod
  • Ally with the Mad Mage of Undermountain!
  • Rescue the missing Bruenor Battlehammer from the Elemental Plane of Earth!
  • Smuggle themselves into Skullport, sneak into Waterdeep, and battle the archlich Vecna before his impending apotheosis and the consequent destruction of the Realms!

Hi, I love the Doomed FR campaign setting, and thanks for producing and sharing such a great concept. I just purchased Fall of Vecna and Reign of Rot, and the maps in the Vecna download are the same as the Reign of Rot ones. Hoping this is just a crossed wire (or a user error!) and the Vecna maps are available. Thanks for any assistance!

Hi Aaron! Yeah we are aware of this issue. Im pretty confident the error is on the DMsguild side. I emailed them about it Friday (which is when we found out about it) and have not heard back -- presumably they are not responding to emails over the long weekend. But I promise to keep putting pressure on them until it is fixed!

I've been blown away by all of the kind words, thoughtful questions, and kind corrections that the community has provided. However, the DMsguild Discussion section has become increasingly unwieldy. Because of this I have created a Discord server. I will continue to monitor the DMsguild discussion page but for more immediate feedback I encourage you to visit us there! Bruenor Battlehammer is waiting with a freshly poured pint:

I also have a few question about this product:
1. When all the discrepancies are finally corrected, will it be possible to get a copy of the updated version without having to re-purchase the adventure?
2. If so, how does one go about adding their name to that waiting list?
3. Any idea when all the corrections might be done?

Respectfully,
John

Hey John!

Sorry for the slow response. Ive been traveling a lot the last month. You will NOT need to repurchase the adventure! You will just need to redownload it. I'm not sure if we will be able to send an alert or not, but will try to do so. Unfortunately I do not have a time table. We need our layout person to do it and he has been busy with some other things.

Not sure if its a worthwhile bandaid or not but if you email me at smcclintock@wcupa.edu I can give a link to a Google doc that has all of the listed errors and their corrections.

Thanks for the support and patience! As relative beginners it means a lot to us.

Hello! I would like to ask a couple of questions about inclusion.
1) What approximate character should the game characters have?
2) Is it possible to choose the priest of the Death Zone in this adventure? That is, how many undead will be and how many opponents will be immune to necrotic damage.

Hi Iurii!

You should be fine with any combination of characters, although I am unfortunately not familiar with the Priest of the Death Zone and was unable to find anything Googling it.

For a Vecna-centric adventure there is not too much undead. The majority are in the Ravenloft section, parts of which could easily be skipped if you did not want them.

Hopefully that helps!

So after some consideration, I've decided to purchase this, and there are already a few things that seem to not make sense (but maybe i've missed something)
Page 11. 'If your players have not played the previous adventure, then begin by reading or paraphrasing the earlier Rise Of Vecna section.' There isn't a 'Rise of Vecna' section beforehand. I'm sure that this was supposed to reference one of the other bits, like 'a history of doom' or 'Doomed Forgotten Realms', but it's still something that throws me off.

Page 13. 'Luskan is roughly 250 miles north of Thornhold and easily accessible via the High Road (see the included map of the Doomed Sword Coast in chapter 9)' I cannot locate any map in Chapter 9, and there is no map of the Doomed sword coast in the 'handouts and maps' folder. Not sure if again i'm missing something, but I cannot locate it.

It does seem very fun though, a lot of effort has clearly gone into this and I'm excited to run it. Sorry if these seem like nitpicks...See more

Hey Adam,

Thanks for the support! They actually don't seem like nitpicks at all, and I'm glad that you've brought them to our attention. We are a small team so as many times as we read through this, stuff like this is still inevitable. And feedback like yours helps us fix it. Both issues are important and will be addressed in the next iteration. The second issue you pointed out though is HUGE and I am surprised that you are the first to notice and point it out. Unfortunately my friend Marc runs the product page and only he can manually add the map but if you email me at smcclintock@wcupa.edu I will send the Doomed Sword Coast map to you ASAP (as well as anyone else). I am so sorry for that glaring oversight.

Regretful regards,

I am reading Chapter 7 right now. I think there are lots of error in Temple wing section. For example, G21 says “the double doors to area G16 ...". But the wing doesn't connect to G16 at all. Gah! Thanks so much Gelan. We appreciate this greatly. Ive looked through the Temple Wing (as well as the rest of the Temple) and noted the following:

Pg 73. G9. Should read "but can be raised as a mummy in area G27"

Pg 75. G12 Beetle University should be G13. Beetle University

Pg 80 G21. Should read, "The double doors to area G20"

Pg 81 G23. Should read "Early residents... from area G25..."

Pg 82. G25. Should read "Other than divination magic or experimentation (see area G23)"

I have passed these along to our layout expert who will hopefully fix the actual pdf ASAP. Unfortunately the exact timing of when they will be able to do so is out of my control but hopefully my comments above can be helpful in the meanwhile.

Thanks so much for giving our product a chance and for reporting the issues! We are very grateful :)

I don't know much about that one. There is a bridge from Wild Beyond the Witchlight which ends at the same level, you just have them run all the optional encounters at the start of FoV to catch up to level 10. You would just have to come up with a clever reason why Toril changed so much since they had been there. Maybe Vecna took the time between them saving the multiverse and their return to strike, or they ran afoul of a space storm of some sort, or maybe it knocked them into a parallel dimension. Maybe the whoel adventure of the Light of Xaryxis was part of Vecna's plan all along...dum dum DUUUUM! The latter is very in keeping with the tone of the Doomed Forgotten Realms.

Light of Xaryxis strikes me as a very different tone from the Doomed Forgotten Realms - DFR is a horrid dystopia, so you might consider how your players will react to that coming from Buck Rogers.

Hey Kayoz!

Unfortunately I have not read the Spelljammer stuff as it came out after Fall of Vecna. It would probably be easiest if your players did not originally hail from Toril. You would need to come up with a reason for why they would go to Toril but perhaps that could be as easy as some kind of wormhole or ship crash. Once there they could come across a battle between agents of Vecna and agents of the Xanathar (the initial quest giver). Ideally they would help the agents of Xanathar. This could lead to an audience with the Xanathar which would then kick off the adventure.

For what it's worth I have been kicking around the idea of doing a high level Spelljammer-themed adventure. At the end of Out of the Abyss, when the players are trying to free Aurmycos from Zuggtmoy's influence, they are transported to the Astral Plane. Ive been trying to come up with high level adventures themed around killing the various demon lords and thought that spelljamming through the Astral plane...See more

Really liking the sound of this, I'm running Rime of the Frostmaiden at the moment and you mentioned about hooks from pre-written modules - is there a hook written for Rime? No problem if not as I have some ideas anyway. Probably 6 months off before I finish up Rime but want to drop in some subtle hints along the way too.

"For a more detailed exploration of this brave new world see our supplemental product the Doomed Forgotten Realms:Sword Coast Gazetteer."

Is this implying that I need to spend additional money to gain a sound understanding of the history of this setting? I'm a huge fan of this module but this feels off to me. A less abbreviated version of Chapter 1 and 3 of the Gazetteer should have a real place in this package in my opinion.

I have both, but I don't think you *need* the Gazetteer. I have found it helpful since I am more comfortable with things being more fleshed out if my party goes off the rails. I haven't had to use it yet other than for color (1/2 way through RoV).

That said, now that you mention it, I would think it would be nice to have at least the timeline on p.8 and Volo's notes on p. 10 of the Gazetteer in RoV and FoV, and would absolutely support adding Chapter 1 from the Gazetteer to both.

I feel Chapter 2, while helpful, is a lot of IP to put into the stand-alones that is not strictly necessary for RoV and FoV to work. That is part of the meat of the Gazetteer in my opinion.

Hi Jake!

Thanks for the comment and kind words and I hear you. For what it's worth we did try to include everything that you should need to run a complete adventure within Fall of Vecna. The Doomed Gazetteer shouldn't be necessary at all. Our goal was to have the Gazetteer enrich the adventure in the same way that the Sword Coast Gazetteer could be used to enrich a Tyranny of Dragons campaign. This is good feedback though. I am currently working on an Underdark Gazetteer intended to enrich an Underdark adventure. I will take your advice and try to embed more of the Gazetteer within the adventure this time!

Typo: Chapter 14, section “Denouement”, option 2 “Undaunted Heroism”: it states vecnas HP is reduced to an amount which is actually higher than the standard one in the stat block.

Also, what about Vecna’s stat block in guide to the shadow fell? Is that out of date now, or is it only intended for Epic Level campaigns?

Gah nice catch Adalberto! And great eye. As you noticed we ended up switching the stat block from the Shadowfell one to something new. The new one was intended to be a cross between the Shadowfell stat block and the one that was released by WOTC. I wouldn't think of either as out of date -- use whichever one you like most. They are both pretty epic :)

Love the concept and I've run the first mission so far. While prepping for the fun in Darkon, I noticed there's no map of Rivalis, even though the text of the adventure gives map points. Also there are locations around the richten haus within the outer wall, but the only map is the interior.

Just curious if this was intentional. And I do not have Rise of Vecna. I'm using Fall of Vecna to continue with after my party completed Ghosts of Saltmarsh. "five years pass and the Realms go to crap." sorta thing. :)

Hey Charles! Thanks so much for the kind words and support. It means a lot to us :)

Unfortunately the exclusion of maps for Rivalis and the exterior of Richten Haus was "intentional". We only had time/budget for so many maps and it was thought that DMs would be ok without these particular ones. Rivalis was assigned area numbers mostly for the convenience of referencing (ie this character is also sometimes found in Area H7).

That said, you are not the first to ask about the Rivalis map! Ive added it to the queue of content to add down the road although right now we are currently working on the VTT/POD and planning out the next phase of the Doomed Realms so it might be a bit :)

My players are still in Rise of Vecna, but I was noodling around a bit with Inkarnate to see if I could make some maps there for RoV and FoV. I made one for Rivalis as a test. It is not very good (I am no artist!) but it might give you ideas. You can see it via this link: https://inkarnate.com/m/3EAyM3-rivalis/

I figured it would need to be a walled town. The water features are weird, but that is how it is shown in the map of Darkon.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
