On the Rock of Bral the dohwar of the Silver Beak merchant cartel are feeling the squeeze as the mercane are moving in on their turf. To make matters worse a recent raid by vampirates has resulted in the loss of the secret production facilities for their most lucrative trade commodity, sweet honeyfish mooncakes. With time running out the dohwar require adventurers with a particular set of skills to infiltrate the vampirate stronghold, liberate the valuable cargo and get out without drawing too much heat. Sounds simple enough right? But what waits in the hidden vault for our intrepid heroes, and could they be biting off more than they can chew?

I ran Dohwar Heist for Adventurer's League at Dragon's Lair San Antonio. Not to bury the lead – an excellent module, 5/5! I would definitely recommend it as a fun, campy romp for any party enjoying infiltration and roleplay. The Dohwars make wonderful characters to roleplay as well.

The timing felt just right to me. I would recommend pushing through the upper floor of the The Beak quite promptly – don't get bogged down in an initiative fight with the Vampirates. I played them mostly for comedy and made a bit of a chase of it down into the lower area. The big boss battle felt a bit on the easy side to me, but I also had some optimizer players that may have skewed things – plus, I didn't think the module was worse off for being less combat heavy. In the final chase sequence, I had success expediting things by using turn initiative and having the same complication affect all party members.

Overall, a very successful module that I recommend for any DMs and players who don't mind getting...See more

Just got done reading through this adventure and will be running it this weekend. Seems like a lot of fun, great job.
I do have one question - *Spoilers*
|Run for your lives!: Is it your intention that characters are not actively attacking enemies during this chase and the only stuff done is dashing, exhaustion, and complications? I assume this to be your expectation by the "read me" document, but I could also see some characters dashing way out in front, then next turn moving normal speed and focus firing on the captain from range. Also, regarding the Dash exhaustion. When you say "Each additional Dash action it takes" do you mean additional beyond the 3+Con or meaning each one beyond the first one they take? By the way. I really love this encounter - it feels fresh and new and a whole new kind of threat. |

Hi Hunter,
Yes that's correct, the chase isn't intended to be a combat encounter, which is why the key NPCs go below decks during the box text so they can't be targeted and the direction is given to mention to the players that the ship is swarming with vampirates, too many to overcome.
In the past I've had players still want to attack the ship with a spell, I don't think there's a problem with allowing that but it should only slow the ship's approach. The intention isn't to fight an entire ship filled with dozens of vampirates, the goal at that point is to get away with the loot to the getaway vehicle which is helplessly waiting for you. Really at the end of the day DMs can run it however they wish, but thematically it's a getaway. If it helps you can assure the players that they'll get to fight the key NPCs in the completion of the trilogy.

Ahh - yes I did miss that part in the boxed text that they disappear below deck. Thanks though - that is what I assumed and how I planned to run it is just as you say. Regarding my other question regarding exhaustion - Just to confirm - 1 level of exhaustion per Dash beyond the 3+Con?

Oh yes sorry that’s correct, they only make the Con check after dashing beyond their allocation of 3+Con modifier. It’s just a copy and paste of the normal chase rules from the DMG. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
