Chronicles of Eberron

Join Eberron setting creator Keith Baker for another journey across the realms of Eberron, from the trackless void of the Astral Plane to the unknown depths of the Barren Sea. Chronicles of Eberron takes a deeper dive into Keith’s vision of Eberron, with expanded mechanics and detailed illustrations that bring the world to life.

This companion to Exploring Eberron contains lore and new options for players and Dungeon Masters alike. Play a Tairnadal champion with the Oath of Veneration, explore the mysteries of the Dark Six with the Aspiration Domain, or—if you dare—wield the forbidden magic of the Shadow. Learn more about the nobility of Khorvaire, the people of Riedra, and the stormsingers of Lorghalan. Face deadly new foes, from the daelkyr Avassh and Mordain the Fleshweaver to the infamous Grim Lords of Farlnen!

In addition to delving into hidden corners of the world, Chronicles of Eberron provides broad guidance useful for any Eberron campaign. What does the average person from Khorvaire actually know about the Draconic Prophecy? What's the best way to start a new Eberron campaign? How can you add more flavor to a long journey, and how do you challenge high-level characters? The answers to these questions and more lie within this tome, wrested at great risk from the Library of Ashtakala. Eberron awaits!

I'd really like the Fantasy Grounds Unity version as well.

I'm just glad Roll20 didn't decide to dump all other VTT content when they got control of OneBookShelf.

That would suck if they did. I find Roll20 to be so... ugly. Like Fantasy Grounds Unity is playing catch up in many ways (finally got audio support and animated maps/tokens!), but at least it looks better, and I find the UI to be far less infuriating. Only reason I'd run something on Roll20 instead of FG or Alchemy RPG or Foundry at this point, would be if Roll20 had a decent character sheet and the content wasn't available anywhere else.

Just looking at the Aspiration Domain and there doesn't seem to be any information on Awaken Ambition as to whether it's an Action/Bonus Action/etc?

I second the desire for and hope that there's a Fantasy Grounds version coming out. I'll buy the physical edition, but adulthood has seen face to face ground proving damn near impossible to arrange versus online, and having a module with everything sorted is much more convenient than trying to convert it myself.

Love the book thus far. Tiny gripe: I wish the chapters on the table of contents had numbers, so when references to them (pg 8, Dragon section says "See Chapter 15"), that I know which chapter they were referencing without having to count the orange headings on the table of contents.

I believe there is an error that made it to print - On page 183 - The feat Psionic Shaper in the 3rd bullet point reads "• You learn the bestial spirit (TCE) spell, which you can cast without a spell slot or components. There is no such spell !

There is a spell called Summon Beast (TCE pg.109) which begins "You call forth a bestial spirit."

I like this work very much. The Aspiration Domain and the Veneration Oath are quite good!

What exactly are all of the additional character options listed in the mechanics index? I can see the list, but what are they all?
Blessing of the Fang - supernatural gift?
Boons of the Overlords - epic boons?
Feat: Shadow's Metamagic - a new feat? additional metamagic options?
Feats: Psionic - one new feat or multiple?
Metamagic: Forbidden - is this related to the feat above?
Spells of the Six - this one is obviously new spells
Variant: Forbidden Magic - is this an optional rule?

Thanks in advance!

Blessing of the Fang is a supernatural gift. Boons of the Overlords are also supernatural gifts. Both are dark in nature and are designed to work both as PC abilities as well as additional flavoring for NPC stat blocks.

The Shadow Metamagic are a series of "Forbidden Metamagic options" which are primarily accessed via the Shadow's Metamagic feat, but could be taken even without the feat by a sorcerer with the DM's permission. All of the options are balanced against existing metamagic by offering power at some related cost (e.g. life payments)

There are multiple psionic feats, complementing the one's in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything by invoking other psionic disciplines (e.g. Psionic Nomad)

Great book but disappointed to see that several parts of it are copied straight from past articles which were free. It's also shown as the book has a lot of "in my campaign" and a few "in this article" which doesn't really suit a book that brings information to the setting. Is it handy? Yes, but could have been easily re-written into a third-person view.

I also found it a bit odd that 'overlords' is not capitalized in the text, I would have thought it would be 'Overlords' due to being the name of a group or title when referring to a single one.

The articles weren't ever really "free" though—Keith always worked on them with financial support of his Patreon backers and covered material that was voted on. The material also includes art, editing, layout, and mechanics as well as being aggregated into a single document that make it easier to search. The idea was always that the material presented explicit options from his personal view of the setting, not anything definitive that you must do.

If you look at past official and unofficial materials talking about the overlords the word is never capitalized.

I can't speak to editing decisions, but I can say that this is an expansion and compilation of those articles, and was not marketed as anything else. Keith, also, always writes with the caveat that In His Eberron or that Kanon is less authoritative than WotC canon, whatever we as a fandom may think. So this is precisely what it was intended to be. And honestly? I love having the additional material, and am happy to support Keith.

Little-o "overlords" is how it's been capitalized ever since the third edition sourcebooks, similar to "daelkyr." It is not a proper noun, it simply describes a certain category of beings. :)

https://keith-baker.com/age-of-demons/ shows he appears to favor 'Overlords' and 'Overlord', but does use 'overlord'. And because I happen to be reading City of Stormreach (3.5) right now, 'Overlords' and 'overlord' appear to be the prevailing uses. On his blog specifically, he seems to favor 'Overlords', but in Exploring Eberron he uses 'overlords'.

At best it's inconsistent :)

I've bought everything else Keith has published here, and I've been reading his blog for a decade. Eberron is literally my favorite campaign setting. I'm probably going to buy this even if I think it's shady, because I've gotten so much free content and insight from Keith's blog, and I truly appreciate all the time and effort he's spent on it.

I haven't bought this yet, because it seems too much like copy paste, repackage, sell as new. I don't agree on your marketing assertion. I read his post about the product on his blog, and you're inferring this was marketed as an expansion of articles he wrote. He highlights topics, which happen to be the same as articles he's written already, and says they are in the book. He never addresses the fact that every section of this book is an article he's written and will be deleting. "In Chronicles of Eberron, I expand on many of my favorite topics" is not the same as saying 'Hey everyone, I took larger articles I wrote, spruced them up, reframed them,...See more

Yes, Keith's blog differs in capitalization from his published books, because his blog is not edited, it's a rough draft from a human being's memory. Exploring Eberron and Chronicles of Eberron reflect the polished final product after it has gone through editing and beta reading. :)

"It seems too much like copy paste, repackage, sell as new."

Chapter 4, on adding new races an integrating them into Eberron, is 3 times larger than the article that inspired it. It's not the only one, the Discord community was expecting largely repackage and refined articles and instead were floored by the amount of new content and spent ages combing through and discussing it. Not to mention the new monsters, subclasses, spells, metamagic, feats and weapons. To assert this is to insult the amount of time effort and passion that went into making this project worth the price.

"He never addresses the fact that every section of this book is an article he's written and will be deleting."

This was discussed frequently and made clear to virtually everyone months before it went live. And the only reason it was deleted was because of the DMsGuild Community Content Agreement, 4.b

You're cherry picking, and ignoring the point I made about the 3.5 source book. Let people think things are odd when the thing they think is odd has been inconsistent for more than a decade. I'm sure the editors of the City of Stormreach also thought it was a final product and well polished :)

"This was discussed frequently and made clear to virtually everyone months before it went live." This seems to be based on you being in the Discord community, and I'm sure others get it from being patrons on Patreon. I'm in neither of those things, and I don't think it's a reasonable expectation to expect everyone who wants to buy this product be in either or both of those communities.

This PDF is being published on DM's Guild. Where on here does it highlight the core of the book is a dozen (probably a baker's dozen) articles taken from his blog and revamped?
The articles are taken from his blog, and he announced the book less than two weeks before its release on that same blog and deleted the original articles in question. Where is it highlighted there that he was/had deleted articles because they were the core of the product? I get that maybe you knew it months in advance, but that message obviously didn't get to everyone because 3 people have brought it up here.

I was addressing your other comment, and didn't see anything about the 3.5 sourcebook because that discussion wasn't relevant to any point I wanted to make and was already addressed by other people. But fine. I'll address that too if you like.

"https://keith-baker.com/age-of-demons/ shows he appears to favor 'Overlords' and 'Overlord', but does use 'overlord'."

Oh my, it's almost like articles like this are rough drafts of concepts that he does in his free time that arn't heavily edited or extensively proofread imagine that.

"Reading City of Stormreach (3.5) right now, 'Overlords' and 'overlord' appear to be the prevailing uses."

3.5 had 1-2 Hardcover D&D books released a month. Editing and proofreading was extensively flawed and the pace was breakneck. Regardless, linguistically, overlords are a category of fiends, akin to archdevil, which is not capitalized. If you want proof of that, read Escape from Avernus.

This is spelled out in the introduction to the book. It's available in the free preview, but here it is for reference.

In the days before the Dungeon Masters Guild, there was no opportunity to create new Eberron content. I couldn’t legally release new lore or mechanics—but I could answer questions. I started doing just that on my website, Keith-Baker.com, and over the years, I’ve written hundreds of articles. But that quantity is a blessing and a curse; some topics are more generally useful than others, but they’re needles in a very large haystack. Beyond those questions and answers, I couldn’t give players and Dungeon Masters new tools to work with until the Dungeon Masters Guild opened up Eberron for new creations.

These pages you hold in your hands—or, potentially, these pixels you see on your screen—contain the answers to some of my favorite questions. This book blends practical advice (“How do I start a new campaign? How do I handle travel?”) and deep lore detailing...See more

I've been working on this book throughout this year. Every article chosen has been carefully reviewed and revised. In some case this involves significant expansion; my original article on Adding Ancestries only included a general theory, while Chronicles includes 13 specific scenarios that triples the amount of content. Even where the revisions are more subtle, we considered what mechanical content would complement the content and commissioned art. The original articles were effectively first drafts; here they have been expanded and finalized.

As for the voice, when I started working on revising the articles many months ago, I did try translating them into third person. Ultimately I didn't like it. This book ISN'T a standard sourcebook; it's more of a conversation. Again, the introduction specifically says "Remember that what you’re hearing in these pages is my personal voice."

There seems to be an implication that the articles were taken down because they were "snatched...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
